Advice for the New Year

Roy Bennett said, “there are five important things for living a successful and fulfilling life: never stop dreaming, never stop believing, never give up, never stop trying and never stop learning”. Bennett’s advice takes, as its name suggests, a lifetime. Nevertheless, when you commit to putting your best foot forward everyday, you will experience personal growth, overcome self-doubt and watch doors open in your personal and professional life.

How can you apply Bennett’s instruction into this new decade? Here are some suggestions:
  • Never stop dreaming: You’re never too old to dream - or to make your dreams come true. This new year and new decade, dedicate time to creating a vision board that outlines what your dreams are for your business and personal life. Once your dreams are clearly in view, you can focus your time on turning your dreams into a reality.
  • Never stop believing: “There are enough people telling you what you should be. Show the world what you can be.” You are filled with limitless potential. Pay close attention to how you speak to yourself. Be your own cheerleader and remember, “You are the author of possibility.”
  • Never give up: When disappointment and discouragement strike - and they will from time to time - remember Winston Churchill’s famous quote, “Never, never, never give up.” Praise your successes, recognize your shortcomings and be fearless in your journey.
  • Never stop trying: Give yourself permission to test new waters and try something new this year and decade. Get creative! Starting something new could be the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for.
  • Never stop learning: There’s always something new to learn. Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.
As you walk into 2020, consider what Linda Ellis teaches in one of her famous poems, “Your life is made of two dates and a dash. Make the most of the dash.”
